About Russian Majolica

Russian Majolica

Our ceramic atelier is an association of artists and ceramists many of whom are members of various professional societies and associations based on family craft businesses.

This is why our works are of authorship even when we rework famous historical objects of art or use our standard molds.

This is also why you can get exceptional art objects made for your home in one singular exemplar. Even when they are made using our standard molds, there’s always a unique component to them: low relief murals, carved ceramics, art murals or complex multilayered brilliant glazing.

How we make our ceramics

First, we design your fireplace or stove.

This process is collaborative, for you are the main author of your future art object. Only your imagination defines how your object will be designed. You are the main artist and creator.

We are the second co-authors of your project, as we are the ones carrying your ideas out — people who work with materials and who embody your visions using said materials.

The fire of our furnaces will be the third co-author of the future ceramic work of art — in it’s heat clay turns into sturdy ceramic; the crystal of our glazes solders into glistening beauty.

Design

So, the design. We make it on computers. We sketch some things on paper and then make it digital for use in projects. Really we are only restricted by your imagination and the physics of processes — other than that there are virtually no restraints to embodying your ideas.

After your approval of the design, we proceed to the next stage — creation of your ceramics.

Formed

Creation of elements, is done using gypsum molds where the clay is kneaded in to give it the needed form. Usually we use forms that we have in stocks, however for individual elements we make new molds.

Firing

The clay is set in and the ware is formed, now we need to let it dry for a while so that we can put it in the furnace for primary firing to turn the clay base into a ceramic piece. The firing lasts 20-24 hours, during which the amorphous clay acquires a solid crystal structure and becomes ceramic.

Decoration

After the bisque (fired ceramic without glazes) is prepared, we continue on to perhaps the most interesting part — decoration. On this stage your future ware turns into a work of art with incredible optical depth and character of a living thing which we tune to your individual wavelength.

The moment the elements are completely done we gather and pack them up to send them to your house. The installer will soon arrive there and assemble your masterpiece.

We have no doubt that the result will go far beyond all your expectations

Deadlines

Usually it takes about 3 months to make a medium-sized fireplace. If the object is big then the general amount of time might be extended to half a year or more.

The installation of your object is also dependent on the size and can take about a month.
